The list below is grouped by the ways in which the contractions are formed, and also by similarity of the part omitted:

  1. Using the first two or three consonants

  2. Omitting a medial consonant or syllable(s)

  3. Based on a short form

  4. Two strokes intersected

  5. Omitting the first syllable

Descriptions and some additional practice lists are on Contractions Intro page. Some instruction books call these short forms also and do not distinguish a separate list of contractions.

Column 1 = contractions, black ink

Column 2 = related words, blue ink

The omitted parts are shown in red text.

Amendments 16 July 2013: Several discrepancies have been found in the largest 1974 red dictionary, in comparison with the dictionaries produced before and after it, and so the outlines here have been corrected (see also Contractions Optional page)

1. Using first 2 or 3 consonants only

Pitman's New Era Shorthand

disinterest* disinterested disinterestedness

*Suggested contraction. This outline, according to the dictionary, is given as an alternative for "disinterestedness" but as "disinterest" is now current, I suggest using the contraction for that word, and using the fuller outline for "disinterestedness". The outlines were obviously allocated before "disinterest" as a noun came into common usage.
